It was like standing at a shoreline on an uncertain day, eyes searching, stalled in worry, wondering whether to take the plunge. Life carried on all around her like the beach on a sunny day. Life splashed and played, built palaces out of mere sand, reclined in restful shade, flung itself about like a Frisbee in flight, warmed itself in summer's rays and friendship's glow. But me? I stood on the edge, water barely lapping at my curled-up toes, wondering, always wondering, Is it cold? Will it hurt? Could I drown? Oh, now, I'd experienced the sea before. I'd swam as far as my limited strength could take me. I'd tasted the salt spray, dipped my head back and played at possessing a swimmer's grace. But, the undertow was always there, always watching, always waiting to pull me down. So, yes, I'd experienced the sea. The very depths of it. The part that could steal your breath away. Tired of forever gasping and grasping for a hold, I'd left the shoreline. I'd run as far and as hard as I could, but there was something I'd forgotten . The sea is boundless, and always right beside me, beckoning me back in, reminding me how lonely it is on my patch of dry land. And so, here I stood again on this uncertain day, seeing clouds gather where others only see the light filtering in between, eyes searching, stalled in worry, wondering whether to take the plunge. Life splashed and played, built palaces out of mere sand, but could I? Would I? "Hey!" a voice called. "Over here!" I turned to meet the eyes that had been watching me all along, dark and sometimes wistful. I saw a hand extending towards my own, strong and determined to hold mine. "Hi," I whispered, eyeing the hand without surrendering my own. He searched my fearful eyes, beckoned to the sea, a lop-sided grin warming his features. "I will if you will." He held out his hand in plea. I looked to his hand, to the sea, back to him, wrapping my arms around myself as if to ward off a chill. "But, what if it's cold?" "Then, I'll warm you." I bit my lip. "Okay. But, what if it hurts?" "Then, I'll help you." I nodded my head. "All right. But, what if I drown?" His eyes took on a serious look. He took me by the shoulders. "I won't let you drown." "Okay," I sighed, wondering where he'd gotten all the answers. "Then what if you drown?" He tipped my chin up to meet my eyes. "You won't let me drown. I have faith in you." He held out his hand once more. "Come on, Sami, you won't be going it alone." I looked to his hand, to the sea, back to him. I took a deep breath and tucked my hand confidingly in his own. I swallowed hard, eyes on the horizon ahead of me. One foot in front of the other, Sami. Just one foot in front of the other. I nodded more confidently than before. "Okay, Lucas," I said. " Let's go." |
