She was nice.

He'd give her that.

And she was-chatty.

He'd give her that too.

Nina flipped her pretty hair and gave him a grin as she took a sip of her water before starting to talk-again. She talked a lot -- about useless things, or maybe things that seemed useless to Lucas. But she was blonde. His mind started to drift when she told him about the sweetest little curtain set she saw for her bedroom. And she used the exact phrase 'sweetest little' implying the bedroom of a twenty-four year old woman was akin to a nursery.

But she was blonde.

And Lucas liked blondes.

Julie was his very first blonde. He had been fourteen and she'd let him get to second base. Then there was Amanda, Celia, Freda, Tiffany, Sarah, Deanna, Loraine, and Carla, amongst others. Looking back, he had a thing for the golden hair.

Then came Carrie, who was the embodiment of everything he wanted. Perfection, and at eighteen Lucas Roberts felt he deserved perfection. He was, after all, Lucas Roberts. But she was taken, and he'd never made it a point to steal someone's girl, knowingly anyway, but this was different. And so he went head to head with Austin , his unknown, and unwitting, brother.

And then there was Sami . . . then again she should be before her acclaimed sister, Carrie. Sami was the first Salem/Blonde encounter, complete with a run-in involving a world-renowned singer and his bare backside greeting her.

And she had the best hair of them all. Soft and gold, not some harsh tone, it was wistful and surrounded her as if she should have been standing next to a unicorn on the cover of a book.

She was the one. His obsession with Carrie was a mere footnote to the saga that was the Sami and Lucas relationship. Carrie didn't have a constant place his life like her sister, she didn't make him want to scream and shake his fist at whichever deity graced the earth with her faultless self. She just smiled sweetly and was perfectly unchanging.

She was no Sami.

The same Sami who was anything but unchanging, the Sami who went from innocent with a scheme in her mind to all-encompassing seductive with a scheme in her mind. And no matter how hellish she'd been to deal with over the years Lucas was a man, Lucas was Lucas, and he'd be damned if he ignored a beautiful blonde.

But it wasn't her; he lied to himself often. It was the hair that made the little twinge go through his body, stroking the string that led straight to his primal, sexual urges.

But now she wasn't blonde.

And it was still there.

Sami had red hair now. She had become a redhead, not flaming, or striking, it was really sort of muted.

It wasn't until three weeks later Lucas realized he'd started hitting on redheads. When did the combination change? Since he was thirteen years old and trying to get his blonde neighbor to hold his hand it was yellow, golden, lemon, whatever. It was blonde.

But then he met Sami.

Ruinous that's what she was. He used to favor green eyes, that gold hair framing a tan face. Then, a few months after their tryst at Titan, he noticed he was flirting with clear blue eyes and a creamy complexion over a drink.

He was sure she infected people.

Because he always thought an obvious dye-job was pretentious. He liked a natural look, or at least an undetectable coloring.

He wondered when was the exact moment she took him over.

He looked across the table at his date -- at Nina, the woman who was another in the line after his ex-wife, another blonde. But the name still drummed into him: Sami, Sami, Sami, a constant little teasing voice that it fit the name. Friggin' tease, often eliciting emotions out of whatever thoughts covered his mind, annoyed to sexual musing. She was the one who smiled that same teasing smile in any situation.

"Lucas? Lucas, are you listening?"

" . . . Yeah, just . . . thinking. I can do two things at once," he said a little more rudely than he intended. He shook his head as Nina gave a soft irritated sound and picked up her drink. And as Sami was off with Austin, or Brandon, or whoever, he sat here with Nina.

Blonde Nina . . . with her obviously dyed red hair and bright blue eyes . . ..

The End.
