"I know I'm late," Sami stated as she entered Lucas' apartment. "Your mother the wicked witch of Salem had me doing grunt work again. I don't care how many times that woman vows peace, she is still out to get me."
Lucas looked at Sami with a slight smirk. Funny how someone claiming to be a victim looked so fresh and beautiful after a long workday.
"Well she is your boss Sami. She still has to tell you what to do." He laughed inside knowing exactly how to get her attention.
"What? Give me a break. That woman will go to any length to torture me. She is the one that introduced us remember? " That should shut him up, Sami thought proudly. Their verbal sparing was just what she needed after the day she had. She hated to admit how much she enjoyed Lucas' company.
Lucas could not restrain the laughter from escaping. "Maybe you should remind her of that sometime, but make sure I'm there. I want to see the look on her face when she realizes she is the one that brought us together".
Together. Lucas chastised himself while trying to look busy in the kitchen. He hadn't meant to make it sound like they were a couple. They were beginning to resemble a family unit, but years of feuding and miles of regret kept him from admitting how desperately he wanted it to be more. How much he wanted her. How sure he was of his feelings. He feared it would take many more years of rebuilding friendship and trust before she was ready for that one.
Sami ignored his last statement or at least pretended to.
"Where's Will?" Sami said glancing toward his bedroom.
"He went to Roger's for the evening. They wanted to play video games."
"But I thought we were going to have dinner together and watch movies?"
"Sami, he's at that age. He wants to hang out with his friends, not spend every Friday night with his parents."
"He's the one that wanted us to act like a family. Wait, if were not having dinner and a movie tonight what are you doing in there?" She gave him a puzzled look and headed over to where he was standing by the stove.
A sweet aroma filled the air and Sami felt he stomach growling. She had to give Lucas credit; the man knew how to cook. And besides he looked damn good in an apron - to bad he was fully clothed underneath. Sami shook the lustful thoughts from her subconscious. Those desires were becoming increasingly difficult to bottle.
"There is no law that says bachelor's have to eat mac and cheese all the time. I had planned on making this dish for tonight and my stomach's not gonna let me give up on it."
"Oh, well how nice for you. What is that anyway?" She tried to sound uninterested but her eyes lingering over the skillet told a different story.
"It's called Pepsi chicken. Grandma Alice gave me the recipe. She said it's one of Uncle Mickey's favorites. Of course, I am sure you wouldn't be interested in anything that I'm cooking"
Cooking? He's more like smokin'. Sami's thoughts betrayed her once again. She had to find a way to stay with him this evening. She hadn't spent much time alone since her father's death and she wasn't ready for solitude yet.
"Why General, if I didn't know better I would say you like prancing around in that frilly little apron?" Her eyes wondered up and down his body, he could make anything look sexy as hell.
"It's not frilly. And stop looking at me like that. You're going to spoil my appetite." He lied. He was starving, but for the feisty blonde beside him not the chicken.
"You know Sami, if you would promise to play nice I may be able to share this fine Horton cuisine with you." He turned to face her and gave his best challenging smile.
She met the challenge stepping closer towards him. "Well if you could play nice I might find it in my heart to let you watch this film I picked up on the way home. It's got that Alison chick you?re always going ga ga over in it." She teased with an exaggerated eye roll.
He gave her a wink and turned back towards the stove. If he had gazed into those spirited eyes any longer he wouldn't have been able to stop from kissing her long and hard, like he could tell she wanted him to. He knew that she might never care about him like he so desperately wanted her to, but there was no way humanly possible to deny the passion they shared.
The battle of wits continued throughout the evening. That dinner had been the most relaxed they had felt in such a long time. It was as if their friendship had never really died; it was merely dormant for several years. They talked of old times with more ease now. Sami wasn't exactly sure if she had forgiven him but a part of her had started to forget the pain.
Near the end of the movie, Lucas returned from the kitchen with a bowl of popcorn.
"God do you ever stop eating?"
"Hey, you can't watch a movie without popcorn." He plopped down on the couch beside her and held out the bowl, "you want some?"
"No, thank you," Sami replied with her best snarky tone.
"Oh come on, it's not like you have to watch your figure." His eyes slowly surveyed her body from head to toe.
Sami's eyes widened. "Exactly what is that supposed to mean?"
"Looks pretty good from where I'm sitting. Of course, I may need a more thorough investigation. Why don't you stand up and turn around for me Honey?"
"You jerk. I refuse to be eye candy for an oversexed pervert like you."
"Oversexed? Who said anything about sex? Get your mind out of the gutter, sweetheart. I was just offering my services as a friend. Who better to inspect your trunk?"
Sami couldn't contain the smile and blush of bright red to her cheeks. Damn, he could flirt with the best of them. Trying hard to hide her amusement, she reached into the bowl and pulled out a large handful of popcorn. It was instantly flung straight into his smirking face.
She placed her hands on her hips and proudly taunted. "Why don't you just inspect that, BABE!?!"
"You forget whose holding the bowl," he said in a husky tone.
She instantly grabbed one side of the large popcorn bowl. A laugh-filled tug of war over control of the ammunition ensued. The battle won by the butter that greased the sides of the bowl. Both of them lost their grips at the same time and a fountain of air popped goodness rained down around them.
It was the most honest laughter Sami had felt in months. The whole world disappeared for an instant as they giggled together on the popcorn-snowed couch. Inches apart, he playfully removed pieces from her hair as she gazed hopefully into those chocolate brown eyes with pure raw emotion. He was so taken by the look on her face, he got lost in the moment.
"God, I love you more and more everyday," came his emotional breathless reply.
With a desperate intake of air, he realized he had spoken his admission out loud. The words hung in the air for an eternity mixing, tauntingly with the sweet smell of the butter popcorn. He waited with absolute fear for her reaction. Unfortunately his fears were confirmed.
She had lost all expression from her now pale face. That look slowly turned to confusion as tears threatened to stain her cheeks.
Sami was shocked, confused and utterly scared to death. Things had felt so comfortable just seconds before. Why? How? So many questions raced through her mind in a complete haze. She did the only thing she knew to do. She ran.
"Sami wait!" Lucas pleaded behind her as she bolted for the apartment door. "Don't leave. Not like this."
His mind searched for an explanation to pacify her. He had covered for himself so many times before, but how would he get past the "L" word. His mind searched in vain. He reached for her arm and she slipped from his grasp.
Slamming his door behind her, she bolted down the hall. Get away Sami. You have to get away from him right now. The tears had already started to fall.
She found her way to the parking garage and quickly ran to her car. Just drive Sami. It doesn't matter where, just away from here.
Back inside his apartment, Lucas inwardly beat himself over and over again. He had lost her this time. There was no hope of mending fences and building a future now. He knew she wasn't ready for that. His own heart betrayed him and cost him the only women he had ever truly loved.
The car swerved violently to the right and fishtailed across the middle line. Sami jerked back hard on the wheel and regained some resemblance of control.
'Get a hold of yourself Sami. The last thing you need right now is another accident on your already heavily tarnished record. This is not the end of the world. I think.'
She tried to pacify her racing mind with some music. She grabbed a CD from the top of a pile and placed it in the player. Cranking up the volume she realized it was the one her Uncle Bo had given her for Christmas. She started to release some pressure on the accelerator and tried to get lost in the song. As the music began her thoughts once again betrayed her.
Your eyes slapped the sky, I thought I could fly
Somewhere on all of this feeling
Try to make it right, no kiss goodnight
Deep inside somehow I knew not to push it

'God this was a bad idea. I do not need some stupid song reminding me of those eyes. Every time I turn around they're glaring at me. And then he thinks he can kiss me anytime he wants to. Who does he think he is? I'm not some silly little bimbo that's just gonna fall at his feet when he shows me some affection.'
Oh it just came out of nowhere
I was shaken by the feeling of it
Oh it just came out of nowhere
Dripping with truth like honey

'Why Lucas? Why now? I don't know how many times in my life I have prayed for a man to say words like those to me. Declare love for me, Sami Brady-the outsider, the misfit, the unloved. "Love", he actually said that. He actually used that word. He couldn't mean it. Lucas could never love ME.'
]i\Maybe I misread what you said
Or what you meant somehow it all got so twisted
In my head the lights are red
Let's make love instead of trying to untwist it [/i]
'Okay, all right. Yes! I want HIM. It's hard not to want a man that looks at you like his last meal. I actually like they way he looks at me, like he can't get enough of me. That would explain why he's always nipping at my heels. Unless. . .? Oh no. No. No, it can't be true. How could he ever love me after everything, after all this time?. how??
Oh it just came out of nowhere
I was shaken by the feeling of it
Oh it just came out of nowhere
Dripping with truth like honey

"Oh God, maybe he does. I don't know if I can handle this. I can't face him, not now - not ever! But I have to" Lord, I want too. DAMN IT! We just started to act like friends again. I don't want to give that up, not now. I missed him. I did. I didn't even know it until we got close again. It's like having someone in my life with no limits. He knows everything and he keeps coming back. He always comes back. Why? Why would he????.Oh God! He really LOVES me.'
Sometimes I cannot say what I want to say
Because the truth gets in the way
Sometimes I cannot say what I want to say
Cause I'm afraid

'Afraid? No, I won't be. I refuse. I am so sick and tired of being afraid'
Sami slammed on the brake pedal. The car slid to a halt in the middle of a busy intersection. Horns blasted all around her but she didn't hear them. She was frozen. Fear had turned to determination. 'I am not running away, not from him.' She did a u-turn and quickly made her way home. 'Home, for once in my life it feels like it.'
Oh it just came out of nowhere
I was shaken by the feeling of it
Oh it just came out of nowhere
Dripping with truth like honey. . . like honey

Sami was the last person Lucas expected to see standing outside his apartment when he heard the faint knock. Opening the door, he stood in shock staring at the only woman he had ever had true passion for. She had obviously been crying. He desperately searched for the words to try and make it all better, but before he had the chance she raised her hands to stop him.
"Lucas please sit down. For once in our lives I think we need to have an honest adult conversation." Her words were even more shocking than her presence. He didn't think he had ever seen Sami so determined, or so frightened.
He quietly nodded and led them over to couch all the while avoiding her eyes. 'God, I didn't mean to mess things up. Now she's really gonna let me have it.
They sat in silence for what seemed like an eternity.
"Sami, I'm sorry. I. . .?" He stopped suddenly when she raised her hand again.
"Lucas wait. Before you say anything else I need you to ask you something. I need you to promise me that you will be honest with me. Regardless of how you think I will react just please tell me the truth. Okay?"
Lucas took a deep breath and nodded in agreement.
With a quiver in her voice Sami continued, "Did you mean it?"
He couldn't breath; he couldn't move. Now he wanted to run away. Staring into those piercing blue eyes he was completely defenseless.
"Yes," he replied, barely audible over the lump in his throat.
Sami read his lips, but she had already recognized the look in his eyes. She had seen that look so much over the last few months.
"I've known it for a while now, I just didn't have a clue what to do about it." He found his last ounce of courage, "I love you."
She took a deep sigh and turned away from him. His heart broke so much with that gesture. 'It's over now,' he thought.
"Lucas, so much has happened between us. There are so many things to consider - Will, most importantly, the long list of ways we've hurt each, your mother, and our friendship. I don't know if I can ever get past some of those things." She turned back to face him. "I don't really know how I feel about you."
His head dropped in defeat. Sami softly took her small hand and grasped his.
"But I want to find out."
He raised his head and met her wet eyes with his own. It was not an admission, but it was honest and full of promise. He didn't know what else to say. He did the only thing he could, wrapping his strong arms around her back and pulling her in for a life saving embrace.
As they sat there holding one another the tears began to fall. Each one washed away small shreds of doubt and regret. As each caress of their backs soothed away fear and frustration, each sigh breathing life into this new beginning.
