I hear what you are saying about the couples aspect of the show, I also prefer single competitors, I just think that once you tell people they are on the show, to randomly send them home without support and the tools they need is like telling them not to come at all. This might have been more effective a couple of weeks in when they have had some more workout experience and more experience navigating the kitchen and how to make wise choices.

But how do we know that they're being sent home without support? I highly doubt they are.

I'm guessing that Bob & Jillian, and the producers (and probably even Ali) all hear from audience members that "Sure, I could lose the weight if I was on campus for 4 months". They want to prove that anyone can do it, not just the lucky few who win the contestant lottery. Speaking from my own experience in a similar type of environment (Fitness Ridge), a week is enough to jumpstart you if you're willing to commit to it. If you're not willing to commit, then it doesn't matter how long you're there for, you're doomed to fail. We had a total of 3 evening lectures on proper nutrition and portion sizes, and the chef met with us every other day to go over cooking healthy skills. The work with the trainers every day for 6 days taught me enough that I can go into a gym and know what to do.
Eliminating the very distracting couples drama that seems to accompany these pairs when they compete on this show, and giving them a defined goal (30 days) should result in a better outcome for all of them.

My initial thoughts were the same as Erica's (and somewhat still are), but I do see Norma's point as well.

The difference is that you KNEW you were only going to be there a week and planned for it and took it all in. They didn't know they were going home and so the prioritizing might be different. The couples left there are now under tremendous pressure not only to lose the weight, but not to fall victim to plotting as it would end not only their stay but prevent their partner from coming back.

There was no mention last night on what kind of support the home contestants would have, if any, so I am going with the none.

Of course they're going to be under tremendous pressure - life's all about pressure, and last minute surprises and your ability to cope with it all.

If they can get through this, then it will make these contestants FAR more capable of sustaining their results than some of the previous seasons' contestants. As many of the former contestants, as well as Bob & Jillian have often said, it's not what you do at the ranch that matters, it's what you manage to keep doing at home.

And it's not like they're shut off from the world. I think the producers probably have supplied them with some support (like maybe a gym membership at the very least), but Bob & Jillian aren't the only ones in the world who know this stuff. There are resources online, at health clubs, at the library etc.

I just don't think that these people are ready to cope. Part of the reason people gain wait is to cope and find comfort.

We will just have to see how it plays out

Exactly.

That's why this might help them. Normally they would turn to food as a coping method, but they know they can't this time. They're being forced to find a new way of coping. What better way than heading to the gym?

If you are one of the people sitting at home waiting to come back, and your partner is offed, you will not be back and you have no tools to deal with your own at home weight loss. No motivation, no help.

If that's the case, then you probably would have been voted out in the first or second week had the show played the "normal" way. Not much difference.

No, they could be doing the best they can but not have the tools to train right (we still don't know what support/instruction they will have. It's based on what your partner does. Said partner will benefit from the experience, the one who has no say in how they do will not get the same benefit.

My thoughts on TBL sending people home:

I think they are using it to pitch the Biggest Loser Home delivery meal plan. I think they are sending them home, on the meal plan to show that anyone could do it at home. They have the motivation to stick to it and lose the weight because if their partner makes it to the 30 days their total weight loss will count towards the teams weekly percentage weight loss.

We may not be vested in the 9 people who got sent home but we are going to be wondering if they worked hard enough on their own to keep someone we are vested in on the show after 30 days. One of the 9 that got sent home will probably be the determinig factor on which couple is sent home the week they get back.

Finally I think the contestants should have been paying attention during week one since the people who have to leave campus still compete in the home competition to win 100K. THat would be motivation enough for me....

Exactly Amy. If you're lucky enough to be chosen as a contestant, then you go onto the show with the assumption that it could be you leaving at the end of the first week. You'd better be paying attention, and if you don't, then it's no one's fault but your own.

Very interesting perspective Amy. I didn't think about the big push to sell the brand at home. I doubt it's a coincidence that while flipping channels the other day I saw Ali (TBL) on a home shopping network selling TBL products. You may be onto something there.

I see they have to arrange for their own trainers.
