GL Canceled! Soap Opera Digest has learned that the cast and crew of GUIDING LIGHT were notified today that yes, the 72-year-old show has been canceled. Check back for more details. http://www.soapoperadigest.com/news/breaking/ Update: 'GUIDING LIGHT' CANCELLED CBS has cancelled "Guiding Light"--which has aired, in one medium or another, for 72 years. The veteran soap's last episode will air Friday, Sept. 18. The cancellation of "Guiding Light" is yet another nail in the coffin of daytime soaps--many of which have fallen by the wayside due to declining ratings. It's not known what will replace "Guiding Light" on CBS' daytime schedule. The show airs from 10 to 11 a.m. on Ch. 2. The cancellation isn't a total shock; rumors of "GL's" imminent demise have abounded the past few days. CBS renewed the show in March 2008--when it was on the verge of cancellation--after a drastic change in the show's format gave it a hip, reality-show feel and ratings remained steady. "No show in daytime or primetime, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years," said CBS daytime exec Barbara Bloom. "We thank the cast, crew and producers--past and present--who delivered this entertainment institution..." "Guiding Light" began life in 1937 as a 15-minute radio serial, before switching to a 15-minute soap on CBS in 1952 (while continuing to air on radio until 1956). The series moved to a 30-minute format in 1968 and expanded to an hour in 1977. http://www.nypost.com/seven/04012009/tv/guiding_light_cancelled_162386.htm |

Yeah, I just saw that on Yahoo news and checked really hard for the "April Fool" punchline, but it wasn't there. |
| Do you remember what she told him? She took her lover’s hand, and she said, “just because something is intangible doesn't mean that it's not real.” Lucas, no matter what happens, no matter what we’ve been through, no matter what I say, you will always be in my heart. -- Sami Brady, November 2007 | |

Whoa. If that were an April Fool's joke, it'd be a pretty harsh one. |

April Fools jokes end by noon. I don't think this is a joke. |

I wondered that as well until I saw that AP was reporting it as well and I don't think they would be involved in an April fool's joke like this. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090401/ap_en_ot/tv_guiding_light |

Are you sure that isn't a regional thing? I've never heard anyone but you say that (since we had this exact conversation last year). Around here, I've seen jokes after noon from people, websites, tv shows... Either way, if this were a joke that got out of hand, it would have been debunked by now. And then there were seven... what goes next: ATWT, OLTL, or DAYS? |

lol, it's a Commonwealth thing. In the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa someone who plays a joke after noon is called an "April Fool". In the U.S. I believe they can last all day. |

I don't think this is a joke. It's very sad but it had a good run. I know the way I've always done April's fool is that it always ends by noon. |

And you, like Norma, are in Canada (well, Norma isn't physically in Canada at the moment... but follows Canadian April Fool rules). My point was that the United States at least partially does not have the noon rule, so the American tv shows and media outlets we were discussing could pull a joke after noon. |

We have the noon rule too. You Tube are still running their silly inverted video joke so it clearly doesn't apply in the US. |
