Surprisingly, there was a great moment on today's show! Nicole told Chloe that she didn't believe Sami's miscarriage/adoption story, and Chloe rebutted by pointing out that Sami could never fool Lucas after all their history.

I'm no Chloe fan, but a broken clock is right twice a day.

Lucas knows Sami like no one else does.

(And if you didn't watch, you might be interested to know that Nicole replied that Lucas is smart!)
Do you remember what she told him? She took her lover’s hand, and she said, “just because something is intangible doesn't mean that it's not real.” Lucas, no matter what happens, no matter what we’ve been through, no matter what I say, you will always be in my heart. -- Sami Brady, November 2007

This inspired me to look up the transcript. I liked this gem from Chelsea (to the rapist):

Your family has gone around terrorizing this town for years, and you guys all walk around free acting like you're normal, decent people. What's that about?

Oh sure, give the Salem brain to the person who's leaving town next!

hope she doesn't take it with her!

Yeah, what is that about. Since Tony's death Stefano and EJ have been acting like the world is agains them and everyone needs to bow to them and that they will reek their havoc....uh...that's who Ron on TBL reminds me of... The Demiras.

But the poor, sweet, misunderstood rapist hardly physically attacked Chelsea at all for saying that! See, he's different from other DiMera's!

I watched that scene thinking how glad I was that Max was right there and wondering just how bad it would have gotten if Chelsea had been alone.

It is interesting to me how ej has been developed as such a common, low-life abusive bully kind of villian. He is more comparable to a Trent Robbins or Curtis Reed than a Stefano (or even Andre.) The "bad Dimeras" are criminal mastermind types. They certainly did a lot of psychologically abusive things to their victims and have no respect for women as equals, but I don't remember Stefano treating women the way ej does. Maybe there was a scene or two over the years that Stefano got physically rough with a female character and I just don't remember it, but I definitely don't remember that being his pattern of behavior.

Stefano did get rough with a female character on occasion-- but it was so unusual that it was a big deal. Stefano prided himself on not getting his hands dirty; on his education/culture (chess, opera rather than anything as "lowbrow" as hitting a woman); and on his reverence for at least some women/mothers.

In 1994, he forced a kiss on Marlena at Masion Blanche. (This coincided with Alan Harris forcing a kiss on Sami... very creepy editing.) Stefano forcing that kiss when he had always wanted to "protect" Marlena showed that he was frustrated and losing his cool.

He certainly never went around taking swipes at the likes of Melanie and Chelsea.

It's sad that "forcing a kiss" seems so mild by comparison to everything ej has done. What's worse is that it sounds like the scenes you described were used to demonstrate Stefano's "badness", and now, 15 years later, the show has regressed to the point that ej can act the way he does and the other characters just respond like it's normal. If the salemites acted like ej were a villian and condemned his behavior, then the message would be that only bad guys act this way and the bad guys eventually get their comeuppance. Having the other characters constantly excuse ej's actions and talk about what a "good father" he is and how different he is from Stefano, sends the message that his behavior really isn't that bad after all. My concern (as others at this board have also expressed) is that ej's entire storyline validates rape and other violence against women - it desensitizes viewers to the point that "forcing a kiss" doesn't seem so bad anymore.

As recently as 18 months ago, that is how characters were reacting. Around the time of John's death/the twins' birth/Shelle's marriage...

Marlena blamed John's death on ALL of the DiMeras and railed at Stefano for forcing Sami to divorce Lucas and marry EJ.

Belle was disgusted that Sami would "reward" EJ for having John killed by marrying him.

Doug gave a wedding toast at Shelle's wedding criticizing the DiMeras for John's death, Steve's torture, and the forced marriage.

Steve/Shawn-D talked at the reception about how EJ/DiMeras had brainwashed Steve and as a result Steve had almost killed Shawn-D and Bo.

But there has been almost complete character turnover since then. John and Marlena, who were tortured by EJ, are gone. Steve and Kayla, who were tortured by EJ, are gone. Shawn and Belle, who were tortured by EJ, are gone. Doug and Julie, who were privy to everything going on, are unseen. Nick and Chelsea, who were privy to everything going on, are almost gone. Other characters who had some involvement, from Billie to the Lockhart family, are also gone.

I wonder if the turnover in characters is just as important as the turnover in writers.

Very interesting points, Medea! You're right, it wasn't until ej "found" John that everyone started acting like he was a great guy. TPTB made their first mistake when they re-introduced ej on the show as a 30 year old and let him dominate every storyline and scene. Every decision TPTB made in regard to ej since then has just compounded the problem. Days isn't even the same show anymore.

I'm holding out hope that the writers really are on the path to letting the current residents of Salem see that ej never changed. If they go that route, the natural progression of that story would seem most likely to lead to ej being un-rewarded for all of his past deeds (i.e., losing Sami's "sympathies", losing Johnny & Sydney).

didn't ej say afterward that he only told marlena about john to gain favour with sami. which i hardley would call a selfless act.

Yes, he did say that but I think it was to Nicole. I'm not sure if he ever admitted that to anyone else or not. IA, that individual has never committed a selfless act in his life.

Chelsea's leaving? That sucks I like her but then they haven't done anything useful with her character in a long time. Also, Nicole and Chloe both know that they are going down. If not now, eventually they will be. I just wish it was sooner rather then later.

I think that it's the right thing for Rachel to be leaving. I really haven't enjoyed her character since Blake was on the show. They reminded me so much of young Lumi!

I hate that they didn't just write Chelsea/Nick off together, though. Hell, I'd take them writing off Chelsea/Dan, because then the show would be free of Dan.

I vote for writing out Elvis & Dan together. I'm sure that Mr. Grope-My-Patients won't have a problem with anything that Mr. Rapist does and vice versa.

True, that. Poor Philip is going to have to fend off Dan's advances now. :(

That would make Elvis & Brady very jealous.

LOL, they should make E.Jerk and Dan fall for eachother and run away to Europe where they can legally get married.
