I know the majority of us might realize why Lucas has a drinking problem and it's NOT about Sami as he once professed, it's about NOT having Sami. I wanted to do a brief synopsis of what occured since 2003 (the last time he fell off the wagon before this year) and now. In 2003 he had barely started admitting to his "true" feeling about Sami, he found out his mother was one of Stefano's prostitutes and that started him drinking again but it all comes back to how he truly feels about Sami. He wanted to confess to Sami his feelings then but he didn't. Throughout all the years before 2003 (during the custody battles, the fighting and everything else) he had feelings for Sami and couldn't admit it to himself let alone her so he absorbed himself with the bottle. In 2003 after the Kate incident he realized he didn't want to do this anymore but he also admitted his feelings for Sami and then LUMI began and he didn't fall off the wagon again for 6 years, even during bad times (seeing Austin with Sami, Will running away, finding out Carrie cheated on him, the entire Elvis obsession with Sami, the divorce, the black wedding, the twins paternity questions). In the end I believe he knew Sami would be around him and he didn't want to let her down. Remember, even during the vendetta storyline Sami was constantly around him, even though she was "married" to YKW. What is going on now is that we see him fall off the wagon a few months back after finding out the Chloe didn't want to marry him and subsequently cheated on him. Mostly this isn't about Chloe at all, it's about the lack of Sami in his life. I bet if Sami would have been around during that time and not in WP he wouldn't have fallen off. It will be interesting to see what happens when he regains his memory and apparently Spoiler: click to toggle since the writing has been totally off the wall lately. Will he realize his love for her and admit to making a mistake by not taking her back when she begged him to. In the end Lucas doesn't have a "Sami problem", he has a "NOT having Sami" as his problem and only he (or she) can correct that now, no amount of alcohol will change that. He needs to admit it and do what he needs to do to get her back. Wouldn't it be wonderful if TPTB give Lucas a 'real' job, like opening up a "rehabilitation center" with Horton foundation money and he can be CEO and run the place. That will get him away from mommy and establish him as a successful business man so he can go toe to toe against YKW. Sami admired Lucas so much when he was running Tony's business dealings back in the day. He can even hire Sami and Rafe and make their lives impossible.....hmmmm.

Isn't Lucas running Kate's company? Anyway, on the drinking: I think saying it's because he doesn't have Sami is simplifying it too much, but that's definitely a part of it. Lucas drinks when his world is unstable or crumbling, when he feels isolated and alienated from the people closest to him, when he needs a crutch to get through the day because everything else seems unreliable. We know Lucas drank even as a teenager, even if it hadn't yet progressed to 'uncontrollable' alcoholism. At that point, the one important person he had in his life was Kate, and she'd sent him off to military school. Then, for years, he might be occasionally seen with a beer or glass of wine, but the drinking-as-a-problem faded into the background. When did it come back into focus? After he found out Will was his son, and started fighting with Sami all the time - which means the world as he knew it had been torn to pieces, and he was struggling to put it back together. He was sober for a while, when he had a firm goal to work towards (custody of Will and marriage to Nicole, which would give him stability and a "happy family") but when Sami started hounding him about Will, and Nicole complained about being unhappy with their marriage, off the wagon he went again. After the coma, he was sober for over a year. He was focused on regaining his parental rights and joint custody of Will. When he returned from Africa, he enjoyed giving Sami grief about her difficulties dating Brandon. It wasn't until Tony came on the scene that he took a drink again. Why then? Was he realizing that his position with the Horton foundation wasn't the same as a fulltime job? Did he fear that Sami would actually manage to marry Brandon (and then perhaps decide to go after full custody again)? Was something inside him telling him that no matter how many girls he dated, they'd never mean as much to him as Sami? It's never as simple as one thing making Lucas take that drink. It's always been building up to it for some time before it actually happens. With Maggie's "death" there had been several people close to him dying, and being a suspect himself, with even Will asking him if he was the killer. When Chloe ditched him, he'd had a couple of years of pure hell, what with Sami's rape, multiple hospital stays, not knowing if the twins were his or not, being divorced against his will, jail time for attempted murder, walking in on the woman he loves in bed with her rapist, Kate's cancer, etc. So: Prolonged period of stress and instability in his life. Feeling betrayed and let down by the people he's supposed to be able to trust. Uncertainty about romantic/employment/custodial status. That's pretty much a recipe for any disease to strike, whether it's a heart-attack-in-waiting or alcoholism. Because Sami is such an important part of his life, she could be his one constant helping him keep his feet firmly on the ground; but when she's not there, it makes a bad situation ten times worse. |

So well said! Yes, I guess he is running Kate's company and that is why I want him to do something all on his own without her influencing him and on the drinking I totally agree but the constant in his life during this last spurt of sobriety was Sami and I just hope she'll be around for Lucas when he needs her. |
