EDMONTON - Figure skating and hockey are not exactly bosom buddies. But CBC Television is throwing the two sports together in a reality series called Battle of the Blades, due to air on the network starting in October.

Former NHLers like Tie Domi, Glenn Anderson, Bob Probert and Lanny McDonald will be strapping on figure skates and teaming up with former Olympics-eligible female skaters in a “thrilling pairs showdown,” according to a CBC news release.

“I heard Tie Domi was in it. Now we’ll be battling in another arena,” chuckled Probert, a former Red Wing who had some legendary scraps with Domi, the former Leaf, back in the day.

Also on the list of NHL performers are Stephane Richer and Craig Simpson. The female participants have not been named yet.

“Whatever else you can say about Canadians, they know hockey and they know figure skating—and are passionate about both,” said Kirstine Layfield, CBC Television’s executive director of network programming. “We’re going to bring the two together in a way that’s never been seen before. It’s going to be great.”

It’s going to be weird.

“They want us to wear figure skates, with the toe picks,” said Probert. “That’s going to be tough to get used to.”

Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean and former skater Kurt Browning will host the seven-week series, which is the brainchild of Toronto-based agent and producer Kevin Albrecht and was developed by choreographer Sandra Bezic.

I shuddered and thought of Kenny when I read the bolded part.

That's exactly what I said to myself, just before I got to that part of the article.

I'll have no choice but to watch it when it airs. It has 3 things I've loved forever: hockey, figure skating and Glenn Anderson.

Norma, you'll have to keep us filled in.

I too am curious who our ladies will be. I bet they're all renting The Cutting Edge to get some pointers.

lol, yeah, I guess since it's a CBC creation, you guys won't get to see it. I can always clip it though.
