(Chapter Two) Sami got in her car, started the engine and wondered what had just happened. Her tears were streaming down her face; the truth behind what she felt was evident. Lucas had kissed her and she all but admitted to still being in love with him. Not only had Lucas kissed her but she responded, and not with a simple tap on the lips but with the passion that she should be funneling to Rafe. What would she do now? She didn’t think it was so important to tell Rafe. She thought out loud, “It was just a kiss, nothing more.” It’s not like she had sex with Lucas or anything, right? She would not tell him, at least not immediately upon returning home. Sami pulled the car into the driveway and headed to the door only to have Rafe swing the door open for her. “Oh Rafe! Sami jumped. “I wasn’t expecting you to wait up for me.” “Well I couldn’t go to sleep when I noticed how long you were taking over at Lucas’.” Sami noticed a hint of jealousy in the way he spoke about how long she took at Lucas’. “Oh Rafe, you don’t have to worry we were just talking about things.” As Sami spoke Rafe noticed that she wasn’t looking in his eyes so he turned her around so he could look straight at her and then Rafe asked her, “What things?” “Huh?” Sami surprisingly answered back at Rafe. “You said you were talking to Lucas about things? What things Sami?” “Nothing really just rehab, making amends, the kids and basic stuff we needed to speak about.” Sami really avoided eye contact with Rafe, she couldn’t really take the fact that she was lying to him but she wasn’t ready to tell him the truth of what transpired over at Lucas house. She kept telling herself, that all in all, it wasn’t that big a deal. Lucas and her had kissed many times before, when he was with Carrie and she was with Austin. She was trying to really convince herself that the kiss meant nothing but she knew in her heart that it did. It made her feel alive again. A feeling she hadn’t felt in a very long time. Rafe was wonderful to her but he couldn’t compare to Lucas. Everything Lucas was Rafe was trying to replace and it had worked while Lucas was married to Chloe but now that that chapter of his life was over everything was coming back to her. Every suppressed feeling, every thought of them together, even the years they weren’t getting along she was thinking about. She was thinking about the last time she called him General…wow…had it really been three years since she uttered that word? She thought about the hurt on his face as he walked in on her and EJ and saw them together. She couldn’t stop herself from thinking what if I wouldn’t have been so awful to him immediately after that. What if I wouldn’t have blamed it on him? She also thought of the friendly moments when she was living in the cabin with him. The good, solid, sane advice he always managed to give her but she never listened to. She also thought about how he kept from drinking himself to a stupor back then and what he said to her today about that time in his life and what kept him from drinking. She was amazed by his answer; she kept him from drinking even after hurting him so much and betraying his love. She kept him afloat. Rafe looked at Sami and asked, “What took you so long” you were away for close to two hours and you were only talking?” “Yes only talk, nothing else, what are you trying to say?” Sami started getting upset; she really didn’t want him realizing that she had kissed Lucas so her defensive tone was very evident to Rafe. ”Why are you so defensive?” Rafe Sami snapped back to reality and played it off as if it was nothing, “Sorry honey, I love you remember? I just don’t like being questioned as if I’m being interrogated by the Salem PD? I haven’t done anything wrong, don’t you trust me?” Rafe looked at Sami, “Of course I trust you Sami, I’m just tired, it’s late, let’s go to bed, ok?” “You go ahead; I still have to take a shower before I turn in.” “Ok, I’ll be waiting for you, so don’t take long.” Rafe whispered as he came in for a kiss. “Ok.” Sami pecked him on the lips and ran off to the bathroom and shut the door. Sami looked at herself in the mirror. She was so frustrated with how she was feeling. If these feelings are coming back in just 2 hours of her talking with Lucas what would happen after the constant interaction that was bound to happen between them. With Will’s track meets, and Allie’s dance recitals, not to mention Will and Allie’s school functions or the picking up or dropping off Allie during visitations. They were bound to see each other at least three times a week and she knows Lucas would make up every excuse in the book to see her more often. Sami entered the shower and as the water ran over her head she just contemplated what her life would be like with Rafe as opposed to Lucas. She thought he was a stable influence on her and the kids, but Lucas was Allie and Will’s dad and there is no better person that the father of your kids as the positive influence, especially a man like Lucas. Lucas was so loving and caring. He was such a good person with a big heart that deserved to be loved. “Why do I put myself in these situations?” Sami said out loud. “Damn!” Sami turned the faucet off and wrapped herself around in a towel and slowly ventured off into the bedroom where Rafe was waiting for her. She realized that while she showered he had fallen asleep. She slowly and very quietly got into bed and under the covers and to her surprise she didn’t wake him up and that just made her very relieved. She wasn’t in the mood tonight and she wouldn’t be in the mood until she realized how she was going to tell Rafe that she and Lucas shared a very passionate kiss. She was exhausted and fell asleep hoping she would not have any dreams of Lucas, although in the deepest part of her brain she wanted to remember what occurred today and she didn’t want to forget it. ------------------ --------------------- ------------------------- Lucas woke up early. It was Saturday morning and he knew it was his day to pick up Allie. He couldn’t wait to get over to Sami’s and to be able to find out what if anything Sami had told that FBI guy about what occurred between them one night ago. Lucas got dressed quickly and headed out the door and he couldn’t wait to get to Sami’s house. He made a pit stop at the bakery and picked up a few donuts for the kids and Sami. He picked just enough donuts to not leave any for Rafe. “I should just get half a dozen donuts but that would leave extra for that guy.” So Lucas only picked up just enough donuts for him, Sami, Allie, Johnny and Will and didn’t care if Sami realized why he did it. Lucas arrived at Sami’s and knocked on the door. “I’m coming.” Sami yelled from inside as she ran for the door. She swung the door open and there was Lucas standing with a white bakery box and a smile from ear to ear. “Good morning!” Lucas said and he started chuckling a little. “Hi Lucas what are you doing here so early? It’s 8am?” “I just thought I’d pick Allie up earlier today. I haven’t spent quality time with her in so long and I’ve missed her terribly. You understand, right?” “Sure, come in and just give me a bit to get her ready for you, alright?” “You know what Sami, here I bought donuts for us.” Lucas put the box down on the coffee table and proceeded to sit down on the couch. “Why don’t you make some coffee and we can have some of these while Allie finishes getting out of bed, ok? I got you a maple one? Are those still your favorite or do you like the ones with the sprinkles instead? I got those for the kids.” Sami could look right through him and knew why he was here and why he came so early and she couldn’t help look at him and shake her head slightly as in disbelief and walked into the kitchen to prepare the coffee. Lucas looked around and noticed no one else was home except for Sami, and Allie and Will were still in bed. “Hey Sami, where is your FBI guy?” “He had to go over to Arianna’s apartment to fix something she broke last night.” Sami shouted from the kitchen. “So early on a Saturday? He couldn’t even stay cuddled in bed with you until at least nine o’clock?” Lucas stated with so much jealousy in his voice that Sami caught it from the kitchen. Sami made her way from the kitchen to the living room and snapped, “Listen General, what the heck is up with you?” Lucas looked straight up at Sami with a grin and she couldn’t help smile back at. “Wow, you know how long it’s been since you called me that word?” “What word, General?” Sami smirked back at him. “Yes, General.” “It’s been a long three years since I called you that right?” “Do you remember what we were doing the last time you called me that word?” “Yes, we were having donuts and coffee in my apartment, how can I forget?” “Isn’t it funny how you muttered the word and we’re doing the same thing over again? It’s like the movie groundhog’s day, right?” Lucas looked up at her as he stuffed a piece of the donut into his mouth and sipped some coffee to wash it down. Allie on hearing her dad’s voice ran out from her room and jumped up and sat herself on his lap. She gave him a big wet kiss on the left cheek with the smell of morning breath all over it. “Oh sweetie, why don’t you go to the bathroom and brush your teeth and then come have some breakfast with mommy and daddy, OK?” “Okay, daddy” Allie looked up at her father’s big grin and ran off to the restroom. Lucas set her donut aside and placed it on a napkin ready for when Allie would come out of the bathroom to eat and he picked one out for Will and set it aside too. Sami would have the maple and then there is just one donut for Johnny. “Lucas, there is only one donut left? You ate two?” Sami looked at the remaining donut with a puzzled look. “No, I got one for you, one for Allie, one for Johnny, one for Will and one for me.” “Oh, Johnny isn’t here, it’s EJ’s weekend so I guess I can save that donut for Rafe.” “No actually Allie might want two, ask her first.” Lucas stated as he extended his arm to reach for the remaining donut in the box. “I’ve set Will’s aside already and the remaining strawberry glazed is Allie’s second one.” “You are incredible.” She said as she giggled loud enough for him to hear her. “I know, you’ve told me that many times and believe me I’m flattered.” “Could you stop it, you are driving me crazy, I know exactly what you are doing, and you don’t want Rafe to get a donut, do you?” “Driving you crazy, ha? I guess my effects on you haven’t worn off, let’s say you know me pretty well too.” “No I don’t want that FBI guy to get anything, not a donut, not the woman, nothing.” “Okay, macho man, stop it will you?” As for the donuts well, we’ll see but he already has me, so…” Sami looked at him as if toying with his emotions and she could tell that she hit the nerve that she didn’t want to hit because it would come back quickly on her. “Does he, really? Did you tell him we kissed and how you responded?” Lucas stated with a confidence that she hadn’t seen since before he went to prison. Sami didn’t know what to say, she lead herself into her own trap. “He has you right?” Lucas playfully took a bit of his donut and flung it toward Sami. “Of course he has you; you haven’t told him you have the hots for me yet. The poor guy is oblivious because he doesn’t know you, he can’t tell if you’re lying or telling the truth. You know, he’s not me. I could know what you are thinking by just looking at you.” “Oh common Lucas, you can’t read me that well anymore, we haven’t spent time together in over a year because you were too bent on making your perfect little life with your hair model wife and you just avoided me like the plague.” “Avoided you like the plague? Perfect life? Common my life was everything but perfect, it was totally screwed up if you ask me. Anyway, don’t change the subject, you didn’t tell him we kissed, did you?” “Lucas, it was just a kiss, nothing more, nothing less. Why is it such a big deal for you?” “The kiss isn’t a big deal, the fact that you are not telling your fiancée is.” “I’m not going to tell Rafe because it’s not that important, okay?” “Thank you, Sami.” Lucas was annoyed and a bit hurt and she could see that her words although meant to be playful had hurt him and she didn’t want that. “Hey listen, I’m just kidding, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you, please don’t take it that way.” “So you were lying?” Lucas shot back at her. “About what?” “About saying the kiss wasn’t important to you.” “Stop it General, stop it right now.” “Okay, I won’t utter another word on the subject but you are the one that has to decide to tell your FBI fiancée Rafe guy before he finds out?” “It’s just a kiss, it’s not like we had sex or anything?” Sami shouted back at Lucas with a hint of frustration in her voice. She was really getting a bit mad at him now and Lucas loved it but she wanted to change the subject because she clearly was about to lose the battle. “Lucas, I’ve been meaning to ask you since the other night, if you have any plans for Thanksgiving this year?” “Oh, I don’t know, I haven’t even thought about it yet. I guess I have a few options, Maggie’s is an open invitation I guess or maybe even Phyllip’s but then again I don’t really want to be around the Kiriakis mansion too much especially with even the remote possibility that Daniel and Chloe might somehow end up going there for Thanksgiving. Why do you ask?” “Well I was thinking maybe you should come here for dinner that day?” “You are cooking Sami? I’ll pass.” Lucas said and chuckled. “Oh common, it’ll be nice, you need to spend time with Allie, Will and even Johnny who you’ve always loved as your own. If you are weary of my cooking you can bring a dish if you wish and then we can sit around a table all of us and have a nice Thanksgiving dinner. You have a lot to be thankful for this year Lucas. You basically could have died and you got your life back.” “Oh yes, a lot to be thankful for. Are you serious? You are too funny sometimes Sami. Who will be attending this wonderful dinner, ha?” “Well it’s going to be me, Rafe” “Oh, that is it, no I’m not attending.” “Oh common Lucas what has Rafe ever done to you? He’s a really nice guy; you’ll really like him if you give him a chance you know. Anyway it’s me, Rafe, Arianna, the kids and you if you want.” “Arianna? Why is she coming here isn’t she going to be with Brady for the holiday?” “Oh no, they broke up some time ago and she’s ready to move on now, she’s single and heavily looking.” “Single and looking?” Lucas said it with a curious tone and Sami caught was he was saying, she instantly responded. “Well maybe you shouldn’t come after all, I wouldn’t want you falling for her, she’s not right for you.” Sami stated and Lucas noted just a bit of jealousy in her voice. “If I were you I wouldn’t wonder about me falling for her I would think how she would respond when she sees me. Oh and since when do you know who is right for me or not?” “Well I’ve told you that Nicole wasn’t right for you and that Chloe wasn’t right for you and I never wanted you to be with Carrie because I knew she could never get over Austin, but you never listen do you?” “Anyway, I’m not interested in starting a relationship now with just anyone so, don’t worry. I only have my thoughts on one thing.” “One thing, ha!” Sami turned and looked into Lucas’ eyes. “Yes, just one thing! and you’ll know what that is soon.” “I’ll be here for Thanksgiving…do you want me to bring the sweet potato or the cranberries?” and as he said the final word he looked straight at Sami’s eyes and grinned and she looked at him and wanted to stop herself from saying the word but couldn’t. “Cranberries please” Sami couldn’t help but chuckle when the word came out. I'd thought you get a kick out of that...I'm trying to remember what Lucas was like before the Chloe podscapade like I call it....and it's coming back to me in a hurry....
