Dear Days,

I have been a long-time viewer of Days of Our Lives, over 35 years, in fact. During that time I have watched, laughed, cried, thrown things, cheered and booed at the goings on that I saw on my screen. There were stories that I loved and those that I've hated. I seen Days handle romance, adventure, mystery and even social issues. It used to be that social issues were handled well. Public service announcements were done or the issues were thoroughly handled on screen. But time has come to once again erase Days from my DVR.

I'm writing this because I care about the show. You can't afford the lose viewers like me. I'm not a dog or a cat or a rat or a pile of dirty laundry or a stuffed koala bear. I'm not an infant propped in front of the television demanding you corrupt my young mind with rapemance or a child who just wants mom to leave him alone so he holds up a sign to appease her. I am, however, a woman. Lately you seem to have forgotten that the majority of your viewers are women. It's a demographic that can't be ignored.

See, for most sane women, rape is not romance. We were uncomfortable with the events that led to Sami being raped by EJ, but we were even more disturbed by the poor handling of the aftermath-no councelling, no AIDS test, sex with a lover without giving him warning, no morning after pill--not a single response to the issues that come with rape. Imagine how our concern grew when the rapist was allowed to torment, blackmail and eventually "have" his victim. No punishment for the vilest of crimes committed against a woman?

Now you are dancing on the edge of rapemance-again. And with this story, you continue to trivialize the issue and ignore the negative feelings of your audience to appease a handful of fans. Yes, a handful. You've bought into the propoganda of a few to the detriment of the many and in the process, you've sold your souls and ruined your show. You continue to demean women, and thus your viewers. You have an actor who arrogantly tells us to move on. Um, no. See, it doesn't work that way. Despite the same actors disdain for daytime viewers, we watch the show for escapism and to root for good to conquer evil. We might like our baddies, but we also know that good must out. With this rapemance, not only have you made light of a horror that confronts 25% of you viewership, but you've taken away the very premise of soap operas.

Days is in a bad place right now. Don't believe me? Look at the ratings since you've begun promoting the rapemance. How many viewers have you lost? How many tune out on days that you feature the pairing? This, despite what pets, stuffed animals and laundry, may tell you, is not what viewers want.

Today I will watch the last of the Alice tribute, say goodbye to old "friends" and once again erase Days from my DVR. I know many others who will do so as well. It's time for you to step up to the plate and value your viewers. End the rapemance. Some of us may be willing to come back, others not, but as long as you say that rape is nothing, allow your actors to call it BS and ignore the aftermath of what it does to women, you won't be gaining viewers back.

If you want to save your show, you know what to do. If not, just continue on this path. You have a say in what happens to the show, but remember, ultimately, it's the viewers who decide your fate. They've been telling you something is wrong. Question is, are you listening? I hope so.

Sincerely,
Erica, a long time fan who wants to once again be able to enjoy her show.

Erica you are the bomb my friend. I couldn't have written a better letter myself.

Working with teens, I know how impressionable they are and believe me, my girls have so many self-esteem issues, they don't need this rapemance crap shoved in their face. I just can't believe in this day in age with women's rights, we have stepped back into the Neanderthal times. The writers and producers of Days should be ashamed and should reconsider the direction the show is going in. I am appalled about James Scott's reactions to the issues, but then again I don't expect much from him anyway. Regardless, maybe we all need to write our letters and attach a copy of Erica's to show that there is more than one Erica out here with the same opinion. I encourage people to write.

Thank you once again Erica for a thoughtful letter. If they don't get it now, they never will.
