I don't think friendship equates chemistry. There has been stories of actors who have great chemistry who don't get along. I think in the case of Bryli they have chemistry and a level of trust that you develop over years of working together.

I've always thought the Bryli friendship is a big part of what makes their onscreen chemistry so natural. Obviously onscreen chemistry can happen between actors who aren't friends or as Kari noted even ones who don't get along, but chemistry is so "eye of the beholder" and difficult to define as it is, so who can say which situation works best. I'm sure like many things, it depends on the individuals involved. Probably even more so it's a matter of the differences between viewers. I like when you can't tell that an actor is acting; it makes the characters feel real to me and that is what I find so appealing about Bryli's chemistry. They seem so at ease with each other, like a real family interacting. Despite all of their craziness, at the heart of both sides fo Lumi, I see characters who are very family oriented and loyal. All of the heat between Lumi is founded in their friendship and love of family. I think it's apparent to any of us who have followed Bryli over the years that family is very important to both actors and that they value their own friendship. So I do think that contributes to their ability to present Lumi as a couple very much at ease with each other - and to me that is what is at the heart of good onscreen chemistry.

I think chemistry is a fluke. I've seen real-life couples, friends, basically indifferent co-workers, and actors who despise each other create great on-screen chemistry. I've seen real-life couples, friends, basically indifferent co-workers, and actors who despise each other with so-so onscreen chemistry. And I've seen real-life couples, friends, basically indifferent co-workers, and actors who despise each other with less than no chemistry.

It's bizarre, actually, how chemistry seems to have no relationship to anything else, including acting skill.

But sometimes real-life affection can compliment chemistry, and I think that happens with Bryan and Ali.
Do you remember what she told him? She took her lover’s hand, and she said, “just because something is intangible doesn't mean that it's not real.” Lucas, no matter what happens, no matter what we’ve been through, no matter what I say, you will always be in my heart. -- Sami Brady, November 2007

I also think chemistry is subjective. First of all you can have chemistry as friends, enemies or lovers. Second of all, I've seen people hoot and holler about this couple or that couple having amazing chemistry and I am just scratching my head, trying to figure out what they are watching.

I do think that off screen friendship does help a working relationship as you know each other and how the other person reacts to something, but chemistry isn't a guarantee.

I think that Bryli has amazing chemistry because they have worked together so long that it is like a well fit glove. They are just comfortable with one another and their acting comes easily.

I love The Mentalist! I wouldn't miss it. I absolutely think if the actors working together are friends offscreen that it helps the onscreen chemistry.
